I can feel your hand in mine in between the creases on my palm and the insides of my fingers My memory unspools A lifeline going nowhere So let's go there They say if it looks like heaven and it smells like heaven and it tastes like heaven then it must be a crutch I thought that paradise was a look that passed between us I wonder how I could love anything that much

about

Max Gold and I have known each other since we were in the third grade, but it took us about twenty years to strike up a collaboration. Our first one happened when I signed on to score his feature film "Silicon Beach." At one of our sessions where Max was over at my apartment to discuss score, I played him the soundtrack to Blade Runner and told him it was a dream of mine to write something like that. One conversation led to another, and the next thing I knew Ben Palacios had signed off on our collaborating once more.

I'm glad to say that the soundtrack evolved from our initial conversations gushing over "Blade Runner." He and I are big fans of Geoff Barrow & Ben Salisbury, Cliff Martinez, and Johann Johannsson, so their influence loomed large as I wrote. When Patrick Lawrence came on board to helm the edit, he encouraged me to lean into the John Carpenter-esque sounds I was working with: the dry synth stabs, the percussive elements, etc. Beyond the hallmarks of the genre, though, Max wanted to include elements of grunge and edgy 90's noise rock -- the verdant terrain of most of the New District kind of looks like the Pacific Northwest, after all -- so eventually those influences wormed their way in. Ben Palacios' suggestion to me when I started work was a crucial one: to weave upright bass into the music, since I'm a bassist by trade. It's in there for effect on "Set Us Free" and "It's Death," and working it in reminded me just how flexible my chosen instrument can be. The result, I hope, gives you a sense of the world we're showing you in the film: one that's natural and unnatural, desolate and lush all at the same time.
