about

Owen Campbell and I went to college together, and would often get mistaken for each other. When we both eventually migrated to LA, apparently people would come up to him at parties (back when there were a lot of parties) and start talking to him about music, thinking he was me. People would greet me as Owen.

We started working together in 2017, and I started scoring his shorts in 2018. He shot Earth Over Earth during the pandemic in 2020, and showed it to me a few months later. I hope you all get to see it; by the time it got to me, it was already a brilliant, claustrophobic piece of work (the claustrophobia was no small feat given that the shoot took place in a relatively empty, open part of California) by the time I came on board. I hope you'll see it someday, so I won't say too much about it, but it's one of the most raw and honest films I've ever worked on. He had temped it mostly with the sounds of actual machines, and given me a list of words to keep in mind as I crafted my score: wind, warble, static interference, distortion, and snow. I think my early attempts at matching the temp and honoring his notes were pretty timid, so he gently nudged me to get weird and throw some stuff against the wall.

There's noise all over this score. Desiccated tape, synth noise of all kinds self oscillating filters, pink noise, dovetailing shepherd tones, modular percussion, etc. As far as the movie goes, the noise is the barrier between the memories we have on the surface, and the memories that live below those. Anything melodic is strained through those walls of noise.

I programmed, wrote, and played everything. Owen directed the movie, so he and I were in constant communication as I wrote.
