about

In 2014, I answered an ad on Chicago Artist Resource to compose music for Death & Pretzels' production of "The Dybbuk." Opportunities for non-concert composers were few and far between in Chicago in 2014, and I was beginning to realize that this was something I wanted to pursue more seriously. The "Dybbuk" was about demonic possession, Jewish mysticism, and love ... it was Romantic and ghoulish, and Madison Smith gave me the green light to get as freaky as I wanted with the sounds.

Over six more years and five more plays, she and Nick Strauss became some of my favorite people and collaborators. Even after I left Chicago for LA, we continued to work together. The music here represents two of my favorite of our projects: "Very Still & Hard to See," from 2017, and 2018's "Book of Maggie." "Very Still" was a collection of vignettes that had a lot to do with Japanese demonology, and "Book of Maggie" was about Judas, Pontius Pilate, and St. Peter trying to save the mother of humanity's future savior, shuttling back and forth between the beyond and our plane of existence. DnP doesn't exactly traffic in the mundane, and that's one of the many things I love about working with them.

Death & Pretzels' new home, the Nox Arca Theatre, will be shuttered on October 1, since the pandemic has wiped out live theatre for the foreseeable future. Nox needs $3K to get out of their contract with the building: everything I rase from this album will go back to Nox.
