In January of '15, Madison from Death & Pretzels approached me about writing a sound score for their upcoming production of Paul Pasulka's "Gruoch, or Lady Macbeth." It's an intriguing play -- it's not so much a retelling of Macbeth as it is an hourlong riff on it. It's about the forces that spurred Lady Macbeth to debase herself for power (a few cosmic shit-starters), and an interrogation of the guilt that ultimately kills her. That's the short of it, though Madison or Paul could wax rhapsodic if pressed.

The play called not just for different styles, but different sonic environments. There had to be music for the TV shows that characters watched, for the dramatic reenactments, and for the events on the outer shell of the matryoshka doll that make up the play. So I took cues from Morricone, Liars, Meade Bernard, Scelsi, Penderecki, Throbbing Gristle, Bartok, Tangerine Dream, Bruce Haack, Morgan Krauss, Implodes, as well as the bad TV and mid-century Hollywood blockbusters that I caught between shows I actually wanted to watch as a kid. The result should be a little disorienting.

There's no real sense of delving into thematic or leitmotivic content here, but it's worth mentioning that a good number of the pieces are in Bb because that's where the bagpipe drone is pitched. If you're doing a score that riffs on the Scottish Play, you'd be remiss not to make some sort of nod to bagpipe music.
